Saying he is in the mountains; saying he has "no right to be a stupid nuisance to one's friends because one's foolish;" saying he can't come to visit because his mother needs him to be there; saying "it is a fixed habit of my mind never to look forward with anything but fear. I enjoy the present wholly if it is pleasant--suffer from it wholly if unpleasant--in front of me I see only the terror of Chance and Fate. That is why 'waiting' is so difficult for me; saying "my Father always said 'wait--wait' about Turner-till [sic] Turner died --and till [sic] he himself died;" saying he rejoices in "your looking forward. I have joy in the present sense that R. [Rose La Touche] cares for me--and--thank God--cares for no one else;" thanking him for his friendship.
